Well, she was brushing her teeth. There's a special kind of tree that the Malians take branches off of and use the sticks to brush with. Some Malians use toothbrushes that look like ours, but others use this kind of stick. Some people have studied these sticks and found out that there is something in this kind of tree that helps to prevent cavities. Pretty interesting, huh? Most of the people I've met in Mali have very nice teeth.
What is this kid playing
with?
The kid in last week's picture was playing with a homemade car. The kids make cars out of metal wires. This guy can steer his car by turning the small steering wheel in his hand. It hooks onto the car with the pole and can turn the front wheels. There's a cool book you may want to read called Galimoto. It tells more about these kinds of cars that kids all over Africa like to make.
What do you think this girl is doing?
The girl in the picture last week was chopping wood in front of her house. She lives in a big city called Bamako. It's the capital city of Mali. The houses you see in the background are very nice ones compared to the houses we have in Ouelessebougou.
This is a girl who lives at the same house where I live. She's hired to be the maid for the Cissoko family. What do you think she is doing here by the wall?
The girl in the picture from last week was washing dishes. She washes them in the buckets that are near her feet.
This is some kind of food. Can you guess what it is?
