Strategies for Effective use of Science Reading Materials

STOP! BEFORE YOU USE THE STRATEGIES READ THIS.
Think Aloud: The teacher models the desired behaviors and strategy use before students are expected to use them on their own. During think aloud, the teacher shares their own thinking while reading a text. In other words, they become metacognitive “out loud”. Modeling may go on for an extended period before students feel competent enough to use the strategy on their own (GRADUAL RELEASE OF RESPONSIBILITY). Read aloud or shared reading, are excellent times to “show” your students how proficient readers of nonfiction negotiate a text.
