Lesson Plan

The Story of Dmitri Mendeleev
&
Helping Students Make Sense Out of the
Periodic Table

Candace has put together a lesson that illustrates how Dmitri Mendeleev developed the periodic table. Students were given cards and were asked to organize them in a logical way based on the limited information displayed on each card. This lesson created the context for examining the actual periodic table. It also gave students an opportunity to make predictions about the information on missing cards in much the same way Mendeleev made predictions about elements that had not yet been discovered. This allowed Candace to have have a rich discussion about the very nature of science with her students.
